Polly Finds a Friend

Title: Polly Finds a Friend

Author: Marguerite May

Illustrator: Thomas Hamlyn-Harris

ABOUT THE STORY

When a young girl finds a lost cockatoo that can’t fly, she has no idea they will become best friends.
Polly Gray learns to take care of Polly Parrot and they play and dance and become queens of karaoke.

Polly Parrot becomes part of the family but it’s not long before her owner knocks on the door. The two friends are separated and although Polly Gray visits Polly Parrot—it’s not the same.

Polly Finds a Friend is a heart warming story of unexpected friendship (both the feathered and human kind), hope and learning to fly.

Literacy and Early learning

Polly Finds a Friend is suitable for newly-independent and early readers. Themes of friendship between a girl, a parrot and elderly neighbours allow for discussion and reflection, and the beautiful illustrations expand on the story’s themes with visual narrative elements and humour. The book includes letter writing, changing seasons, growing up, Australian animals as well as an information page about cockatoos.
